From Saddles to Spires: Historical Spiritual Tour with AOW

Experience the “Circuit Rider” Legacy on our Historic Worship Tour

Before there were cathedrals, there were “Circuit Riders”—pioneer ministers who braved the elements on horseback, hiking boots, and skis to bring hope to the remote corners of the Rockies.

At Adventures Out West (AOW), we’re swapping the horses for a modern ride, but the spirit of discovery and hope remains the same.

Join us for a 3-hour journey through the soul of Colorado Springs. You’ll stand in the shadow of Pikes Peak and see how spiritual inspiration grew from humble tents into architectural masterpieces carved from local stone.

Why We Built This Tour

Our city founder, General Palmer, planned Colorado Springs as a spiritual Shangri-La and oasis out west. As a devout Christian, he wanted to build a city free of sin and alcohol in a place so beautiful that it could only have been inspired by God (the Garden of the Gods).  Palmer provided free plots of land to any minister who wanted to come and build a church in his city. Thus laying the foundation for this architectural and spiritual tour out west.

A Unique Fact

Colorado Springs is home to twelve sites on the National Register of Historic Places. We created this experience for the explorers who want to see beyond the modern skyline and dive into the grit and grace of the Front Range’s original fellowship. From soaring Gothic spires to rugged Spanish Mission arches, these stones tell the story of a city rising from the dust.

A Sneak Peek at Your Route:

  • The Trailblazer: The First United Methodist

Stand where it all began. Completed in 1871, this is the oldest church in the city—the true cornerstone of Colorado Springs.

  • The Survivor: St. Mary’s Cathedral

Before she was a brick-and-limestone beauty, early masses were held in secret and on the move. See how Father Machebeuf’s 1860s mission transformed into the fireproof icon she is today.

  • The Romanesque Giant: First Congregational Church

Built with “Wall Mountain Tuff” quarried right here in Colorado, this 1889 marvel feels like a fortress of faith.

  • The Great Canopy: First Presbyterian Church

  • Founded by missionary Sheldon Jackson just days before the city was even incorporated! Today, it’s a stunning blend of 1872 history and cutting-edge modern design.

  • The English Classic: The Grace & St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church

This 1872 gem brings a touch of Tudor and Gothic revival to the West, built with sturdy rhyolite rubble that has stood the test of time.

  • The Collegiate Jewel: The Shove Memorial Chapel

  • Nestled on the Colorado College campus, this 1931 chapel was built from Bedford limestone and designed in a graceful Norman Romanesque style that feels like a trip to the Old World.

The Grand Finale: Glen Eyrie

We wrap up the adventure at the legendary Glen Eyrie, the historic estate of General Palmer. You’ll visit the serene grounds where the Navigators now reside. Our guests have experienced life-changing moments here—but we’ll let your guide tell you those stories in person. Maybe you will have a few spiritual chills of your own.
