Colorado Springs Great Plains Safari flight at the foot of Pikes Peak!
Have you ever been in a plane and wished you could feel the breeze in your hair, or have a bigger window? Hot air balloon flights are the most beautiful way to see the world. Often sighted on our excursions are Antelope, Deer and Other common plains animals. Views for 100 miles are possible including Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods. Completely serene, with no “dropping” feeling or shaking. Adventures Out West is the safest hot air balloon company anywhere and has been in operation for half a century, since 1973. It is definitely an Adventure Out West.
Why choose Adventures Out West?
You can trust AOW for an amazing experience because the tours have been refined since 1973. You will get to fly with a world-class pilot who will show you the beauty of Colorado.
AOW is family-owned and operated, ensuring that we can offer you the best possible adventure at every level.
Capacity and details.
Hot air balloon baskets range from 2-person to 10-person capacity. Each basket is divided into several 2-3 person compartments. Do you have a large group? Call to inquire about a second pilot.
Make new friends as you fly together or book a private tour for just you and your loved ones. Adventures Out West does flights for all kinds of special occasions including birthdays, photo shoots, engagements, vow renewals, anniversaries, and weddings.
All flights leave at sunrise for the safest weather and the best views. The average airtime is between 45-minutes to 1-hour.
Comfort and Safety.
Children must be over 46 inches tall in order to see over the side of the basket. Younger kids can ride, but they will not be able to see and cannot be held.
All guests must be under 250 pounds to fly. Everyone also has to be able to get in and out of the 46-inch-tall basket.
Hot air balloons are caried exclusively by the wind. There is no motor or propeller of any kind. Pretty cool! Because of that fact, they are very susceptible to weather conditions. For your safety, about 25% of flights are cancelled. If possible, it’s a good idea to book your flight with one of two days as “backup.”
All tours are at your own risk, but you will be riding with a highly experienced pilot. AOW has an incredible safety record with a team of pilots and crew that have flown the front range thousands of times. Go with a Colorado pro.
Book with confidence knowing that you can cancel for any reason at least 24-hours in advance for a full refund. No refunds for cancellations within 24-hours of the departure.
Reservations are required for hot air balloon flights. In the summer months, dates sell out 1 to 2 weeks in advance.

Detailed adventure story—-Prepare yourself for the incredible, on a Colorado hot air balloon ride. Since the first recorded flight in 1783, scientists, explorers, and sightseers have attempted to tame the gentle giants. The balloon flies free of the Earth for a dance with the clouds and the Almighty. Adventures Out West will ensure you have a safe and memorable adventure as the hot air balloon team works in symphony, directed by the pilot with the crew as the instruments.
That is a fancy way of saying ‘hold on and here we go.’ The variable winds, landowner relations, and vehicle transportation dictate when and where we can fly. Often times our flight team will change launch sites to ensure the safest flight paths. Pi balls, wet fingers, and a keen sense of the weather help determine the ultimate launch site for the day.
A typical balloon flight involves 15-30 minutes of van transportation time finding the launch sites. Once we are in the launch field it takes about 20 minutes to assemble the balloon, load the guest and prepare for launch. This is an exciting time of anticipation with the sound of the fans filling the balloon envelope with air. With the pilot lights lit, the roar of the burner brings the gentle giant to life and then it’s time to load up.
Guests will need to be able to climb up and over the 4-foot-high leather rails of the basket.
(The Manufacturer limits our loading capacity based on size. Guests over 225lbs need to call our office to book our ride. This is a safety consideration, and we need to know your exact weights to safely balance the aircraft. Guests over 225 may be asked to disembark if they are not pre-approved prior to the flight morning. If you can’t climb in, then this activity is not for you.)
The basket is small by design and strongly built to hold our guest snug and secure. Depending on how many guests are booked there may be up to three people per compartment.
Up Up and away! It’s time to fly. Sights and sounds of the flight include long vistas of the Colorado Front Range and characters below. Cars and trucks, airplanes and wildlife are commonly spotted. No two flight patterns are ever the same and wildlife cannot be guaranteed. Neither the total flight time nor landing site can be determined in advance. Some flights are slow moving and climb to several thousand feet. Other times we cruise Easterly in stronger trade winds. We always try to fly for at least 45 minutes. How long or where we land is tough to tell but one thing for sure is that we don’t know in advance of launch time. If the forecast is for gusty winds, strong winds aloft, precipitation, or low clouds, we do not fly and often times we can cancel the flight in advance. Sometimes the flight makes it to the field only to be canceled at that time. This is the adventure of ballooning. We do not file flight itineraries and we do not have bathrooms on board. We do serve champagne though after the flight.
But first we must land the balloon. Or as the guest says, “We crashed.” No, we didn’t but it can be rough. The balloon does not have wheels and shock absorbers. The balloon will bounce once or twice (and maybe a third time) before it drags to a stop. On calm days it may only move a few feet. Other times we have drug hundreds of yards through fields and brush, (a high wind landing). On most flights the basket will end up on its side just opposite the inflation with guest giggling, laughing and laying on top of each other. This is landing and is the FULL ADVENTURE! Sometimes it takes the crew up to 30 minutes to get to us. Be prepared with proper clothing including tennis shoes and or boots. The pilot, wears Hiking boots, jeans and a sweatshirt for the flight. Coats are recommended.
Balloon recovery from a far-off field that might be wet or sandy can be an adventure for sure. The areas we fly in and are very familiar with generally are easy for recovery but sometimes we get stuck (more giggling and laughing). Our crew busts out the truck and the adventure continues. During this portion of the show, the guest will be entertained by the pilot while sipping champagne and enjoying the Great Plains of Colorado. Watch your step! Cactus, Prickly and other things that bite may be encountered.
The Champagne toast is a tradition dating back to the first days of ballooning. It is a light snack in the field and a good time for photos and memory making. It takes the balloon crew about 20 minutes to pack up a balloon and load it in the trailer.
Once the balloon is loaded it is time to head back to the meeting point. This can be 5 minutes or 30 minutes depending on the flight. A typical flight adventure is 3-4 hours. If everything goes according to plan you should be done in 3.5 hours.
Obviously, there are a lot of variables on this timeline and too many to list. Please prepare your expectations and be ready for a once in a lifetime outdoor adventure in Colorado.
It’s so beautiful up here. No wonder the birds sing.
