How AOW Created the Most Unique Zipline Course in Colorado

by | Feb 19, 2026 | Blog, Ziplines

Forget the cookie-cutter wooden towers and flat forest glides. In the rugged shadows of Pikes Peak, Adventures Out West (AOW) decided to tear up the traditional blueprint. By trading artificial poles for ancient granite and replacing “rides” with “expeditions,” they’ve forged a “no-tower” zipline experience that captures the raw, untamed spirit of the Rockies.

Cliff-to-Cliff: Gravity’s Playground

The secret to the AOW adrenaline rush lies in the jagged geography of Gregory Gulch. While other courses rely on man-made scaffolding, AOW utilizes the earth itself. You won’t find any shaky ladders here; instead, you’ll launch from natural cliff edges and stick the landing on rocky perches. This “rustic” design creates a terrifyingly beautiful sense of scale, letting you soar over the canyon floor just as the red-tailed hawks do.

The “Freestyle” FrontierZiplines in Colorado Springs

This isn’t a passive ride—it’s an invitation to defy gravity. AOW offers an “active participant” experience that sets tourists apart from explorers. Under the watchful eye of expert guides, you’re encouraged to push your limits:

  • Go Inverted: Flip upside down to see the canyon from a new perspective.
  • The Spin: Test your equilibrium as you barrel through the mountain air.
  • Freestyle Exits: Launch into the abyss with your own signature style.

With five distinct lines ranging from 225 to over 650 feet, the course is punctuated by scenic nature hikes that let you catch your breath before the next plunge.

The Full-Throttle Expedition

The adventure begins long before the first clip-in. To reach the high-altitude launch points, you’ll rumble up a rugged mountain trail in one of the two modified 4×4 Humvees. It sets the tone: this is a mission of serious fun, not a tour.

Masters of the Line

A world-class thrill requires world-class guardians. AOW guides don’t just meet industry standards; they shatter them. While typical Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) certifications require 40-70 hours of training, AOW requires 80+ hours of additional specialized training.

Zipline Manager Ben “Tropical Chaos” Nadenick, a 10-year veteran of ziplining hailing from Florida, lives for the “first step.” For him, it’s about watching guests transform their fears into the pure thrill of the flight. These guides handle every connection and every brake, leaving you free to focus on the horizon.

Let’s Talk “Cable”

These ziplines utilize high-strength galvanized steel aircraft cable (GAC), selected for its superior durability, flexibility, and corrosion resistance. The cables are constructed from seven strands of 19 wires each, ensuring high breaking strength for maximum safety. According to Tropical Chaos, these cables are replaced proactively when they still have one-third of their service life remaining. To assist with the heavy lifting during replacement, guides utilize Humvees to tension and position the lines. For ongoing safety, all cables, towers, and braking systems undergo daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspections as well as annual audits by Independent Inspectors/Engineers.

For those looking to embrace the canyon after hours, AOW’s “Family Night” tours offer an additional and affordable transition from high-speed thrills to high-altitude chills, ending the day with s’mores around a crackling fire as the sun dips behind the peaks.

Adventures Out West hasn’t just built a zipline; they’ve created a pilgrimage for the bold. If you’re ready to stop riding and start flying, the canyon is calling.
